Glen Hansard, Acclaimed Irish Musician, Dies at 56

Glen Hansard, the celebrated Irish singer-songwriter and actor, tragically passed away in a motorcycle accident in Dublin early Wednesday. He was 56 years old. Hansard’s management, ATC Management, released a heartfelt statement to CBS News confirming his passing. They expressed their deep sorrow at his death.

Authorities reported that a man in his 50s was involved in a single-vehicle motorcycle crash in the suburb of Lucan near Dublin. The incident happened before 4:30 a.m. on Wednesday. Although emergency crews treated him at the scene, he was declared dead shortly after. Police are requesting any witnesses of the accident to come forward, according to BBC News.

Born in Dublin in 1970, Hansard began his career busking in the city streets. His first acting role was in the 1991 film “The Commitments,” where he brought to life the character of Outspan Foster. He later blended his musical talent with acting in the 2007 film “Once.” Together with Markéta Irglová, he co-wrote the film’s songs and starred in the movie. Their collaborative work earned them the 2008 Oscar for Best Original Song for “Falling Slowly.” A Broadway adaptation of “Once” ran from 2012 to 2015, garnering eight Tony Awards and was staged internationally.

Away from the screen, Hansard was notably the frontman of The Frames, a rock band, and teamed with Irglová in the rock duo The Swell Season. His solo career included five albums, with “Didn’t He Ramble” being nominated for a Grammy in 2016 for Best Folk Album. Hansard was a frequent guest on CBS Saturday Mornings’ “Saturday Sessions,” showcasing his music in 2015, 2018, and 2024. In 2025, he and Irglová performed songs from “Forward,” their new album as The Swell Season, marking their first release together in 16 years.

Hansard was also involved in charitable work, leading the Christmas Eve charity busk outside Dublin’s Gaiety Theatre to support the Dublin Simon Community, which aids the homeless. The organization expressed their devastation upon learning of his death and praised his generous spirit and dedication to their work.

He is survived by his wife and a young son, who is three years old. In a 2023 interview with the BBC, Hansard mentioned that becoming a father had profoundly changed his life for the better. Ireland’s Prime Minister Micheál Martin commented on the loss, expressing deep sadness over Hansard’s passing and acknowledging his significant impact on Ireland’s culture. Martin extended his sympathies to Hansard’s family, friends, and admirers through a post on X.
