Strategic Preparations by Republicans
In South Carolina, the Republican Party is focused on swiftly appointing a replacement for Senator Lindsey Graham. President Donald Trump and Governor McMaster are coordinating efforts to fill the vacancy left by Graham and plan for a special election. Potential candidates for this position include Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette and Rep. Russell Fry. The party is advised to avoid internal conflicts in these proceedings.
Trump’s Influence and Endorsements
President Trump shared his thoughts on possible successors, noting Rep. Russell Fry as a potential long-term replacement. Fry has garnered attention for his victory in the 2022 Congressional race, notably supported by Trump, where he unseated former Rep. Tom Rice who had voted for Trump’s impeachment post-Jan. 6 riots.
“Russell Fry, a young congressman, is outstanding, and that could happen. He’s very talented,” remarked Trump on Newsmax.
Despite Fry’s communication with the White House, awaiting formal confirmation, others in the South Carolina GOP, such as Nancy Mace and Ralph Norman, are also vying for Trump’s endorsement. Norman has expressly sought Trump’s backing.
Temporary Appointment
Governor Henry McMaster appointed Graham’s sister, Darline Graham, as the interim senator. Trump expects her role to remain temporary as the GOP finalizes their candidate for the special election.
Graham’s appointment is a strategic move to maintain the Republican majority in the U.S. Senate.
