Graham Platner Ends Senate Campaign Amid Allegations

Graham Platner announced the end of his Senate campaign following allegations of sexual assault. This decision follows days of uncertainty and internal strife within the Democratic Party. His exit leaves the party without a candidate for the crucial Maine race.

Platner, known for his populist progressive stance, faced an accusation from a former partner regarding an incident in 2021. As support dwindled among top Democratic allies, many withdrew endorsements, urging him to leave the campaign. In a video posted on X, Platner refuted the claim as false but acknowledged the pressure it imposed. He expressed concerns about his ability to fundraise, access voter data, and run an effective campaign.

“What comes next needs to come from the people, needs to come from the people of Maine,” Platner stated. “It needs to be open, transparent and democratic.”

Platner emphasized the need for a transparent process that reflects the values of the movement he helped build, concluding that his continued candidacy was impossible due to systemic barriers.

The Maine Democratic Party now faces the challenge of replacing Platner on the ballot by a July 27 deadline. The selection process remains uncertain, with several contenders aiming to challenge Republican Sen. Susan Collins.

The state party plans to hold a nominating convention to choose a new candidate, promising transparency throughout the process. Platner’s decision followed warnings from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and other party leaders who threatened to withdraw support if he stayed on the ballot.

The allegations had a ripple effect, with leading figures like Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Rep. Ro Khanna denouncing sexual assault. Warren emphasized zero tolerance, while Khanna called the allegation serious. Sen. Bernie Sanders, previously supportive of Platner, advised him to step aside.

Platner’s departure complicates the Democratic strategy in Maine. The party aims to secure a net gain of four Senate seats, with Maine among the few potential opportunities.

During the primary, Platner won decisively, defeating the establishment-backed Gov. Janet Mills. He had garnered support from notable progressives, resonating with a rising populism within the Democratic base.

The allegations emerged through Politico, with a woman named Jenny Racicot accusing Platner of nonconsensual behavior. Platner categorically denied any such conduct.

Following multiple revelations, Platner admitted to reconsidering his position. Past controversies include a skull-and-crossbones tattoo linked to Nazi associations, controversial Reddit posts, and claims of toxic behavior from former partners.

Platner encouraged his supporters to keep advocating for the campaign’s values.

“We’re going to win some day,” he stated, urging continued momentum.
