Grant Bowen, a prominent junior at IC Catholic, excels on the football field as a tight end and outside linebacker. Standing 6-foot-4 and weighing 205 pounds, he is a formidable player for the Knights. His talent has attracted 38 Division I offers, including top-ranked schools like Indiana, Texas, Georgia, and Alabama.
Bowen appreciates the opportunity to connect with college coaches and learn about their programs. Yet, he values the guidance of his father, Matt Bowen, even more. Matt, a former NFL safety and assistant coach at IC Catholic, has been a crucial influence on Grant’s journey.
“Having my dad around has been invaluable,” Grant said. “He’s helped me navigate football since I was young.” Aside from football, Grant has played basketball and dabbled in baseball, track, and soccer. This multi-sport experience contributes to his athletic prowess.
“His diverse athletic background enhances his movement,” Matt Bowen explained. “His natural explosiveness shines on any field.”
Grant credits his coaches at IC Catholic for his development. He shares a deep connection with his father, discussing practice insights at home.
“Coaching my son is incredibly rewarding,” Matt Bowen expressed. “I’ve coached him from youth leagues through high school. The environment at IC Catholic makes this experience special.”
Teammates also notice the positive impact of the Bowens. “Everyone appreciates coach Bowen,” said senior quarterback Nate Lang. “Grant and his dad have a great rapport, benefiting the entire team.”
Grant’s impressive stats in his third varsity season reflect his abilities. As a sophomore, he recorded 34 catches, 731 yards, and 11 touchdowns, contributing significantly on defense. In the current season, he continues to excel with 24 catches, 486 yards, seven touchdowns, and pivotal defensive plays.
Nate Lang commented, “Grant makes my job easier with his size and trustworthiness. He has improved consistently over two years.”
Coach Bill Krefft, with four state titles under his belt, recognizes Grant’s unique talent. “Grant stands out with his physical and mental readiness,” Krefft said. “His football IQ and leadership on the field are exceptional.”
Recruiters have taken notice. Bowen plans to narrow his college choices post-season and commit next summer.
“Recruiting today is intense,” Matt Bowen observed. “It’s a different process from my time, but Grant handles it maturely.”
Grant’s athletic potential remains untapped. Matt envisions further development at the college level, predicting significant growth in size and skill. “He’s driven to excel,” Matt said.
Grant aims to follow in his father’s footsteps. “The NFL is my ultimate goal,” he stated. However, his immediate focus remains on achieving state success with the Knights.
“Grant’s readiness from the start has been impressive,” Krefft noted. “He could play professionally already, yet we are fortunate to have him for another year and a half.”
Matt Bowen cherishes the time coaching Grant. “I wish it could last longer,” he confessed. “This experience has been truly fulfilling.”
