Thousands are rallying against a proposed data center next to the Nashville Zoo. Conservationists and residents fear the project may harm animals, overextend resources, and change the environment permanently.
The zoo initiated a petition on Change.org to block the construction. By Thursday, it gathered almost 37,000 signatures rapidly. The petition asks city leaders to reject the facility adjacent to the zoo in South Nashville.
Petition supporters highlight risks linked to AI-driven infrastructure, especially impacts on wildlife managed in sensitive habitats. The petition coincides with a nationwide surge in data center construction due to increased demand for AI and digital services.
Numerous facilities operate nationally; many more are impending. Communities and environmental groups increasingly resist, citing worries over energy consumption, water use, noise, and environmental impact.
“Our biggest concerns about the data center being built are the negative environmental and public health impacts these centers are known to cause,” zoo spokesperson Leah Trice told Newsweek. “Data centers consume enormous amounts of electricity and water; straining power grids, depleting natural resources, and damaging our watershed.”
Trice mentioned noise from generators and light pollution can disrupt animal behaviors, particularly affecting clouded leopards, their signature conservation species.
New Nashville Data Center: What We Know
Georgia-based DC Blox seeks a city permit for a data center over 69,000 square feet next to the zoo, The Tennessean noted. The site could expand with more buildings later.
The zoo’s petition calls for rejection. However, District 5 Councilmember Sean Parker indicated there’s no current legislation for voting on the proposal.
Zoo officials worry that without environmental assessments, irreversible damage may occur to animals and communities.
“How are we to know this new data center will not lead to irreversible damage to the animals we exist to protect?” the petition stated.
Supporters include locals voicing their concerns. One noted loving nearby gibbons and opposed a data center disrupting their neighborhood. Another criticized using essential resources next to a zoo.
The Nashville Zoo houses 3,000 animals and attracts 1.4 million visitors a year. The zoo asks community support in opposing the center’s construction.
Nashville Data Center Developer Pushes Back
Developers argue the data center will benefit Nashville’s economy and provide crucial infrastructure.
“The DC BLOX project would provide much-needed digital infrastructure to Nashville to support future economic growth and represents a substantial investment and expected tax contributions,” the company stated.
They vow to employ water-efficient designs and comply with environmental standards. Opponents demand independent analysis, disputing that economic benefits outweigh environmental risks.
What Happens Next
The Nashville facility remains under review. Permit approvals are pending.
Trice emphasized community advocacy is needed to oppose the center, underscoring potential effects on animals and residents.
The petition’s momentum underscores a growing challenge on data center placements and their environmental costs.
