Hasan Piker Faces Backlash Amid University Speaking Engagement Cancellation
The American left recently experienced a taste of politically correct cancellation as Hasan Piker, a controversial podcaster, saw his speaking engagement at the University of Washington canceled. The decision stemmed from his unorthodox rhetoric, according to the university’s statement. The university stated, “Going forward, procedures will be updated to ensure the standards we have for university-hosted events like the Speaker Series are met, particularly so that we can help elevate the level of dialogue on divisive topics during a polarized time in our country.”
This statement suggests concerns about his controversial comments, such as his claims about 9/11 and other sensitive issues. While conservatives, including groups like Turning Point USA, stand by his right to speak, the university remains consistent in its approach to event standards.
Despite the support from conservative groups, Democratic politicians and liberal media who previously praised Piker remain silent on his cancellation. Piker himself questioned whether liberal outlets would cover his silencing as intensely as they would for conservative figures like Charlie Kirk or Ben Shapiro.
Piker’s cancellation puts him at odds with his own political allies. For instance, Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, who previously hosted Piker, has stayed quiet on this issue. This raises questions about Piker’s perceived value at various Democratic events despite his controversial reputation.
Currently, conservatives are the ones decrying the censorship. They advocate for free speech regardless of political alignment and see Piker’s voice as beneficial to their own agendas by highlighting his controversial stances.
Piker’s situation also complicates matters for progressives like El-Sayed, as well as Troy Jackson and James Talarico, running for Senate in Maine and Texas, respectively. These candidates may have to reconsider Piker’s presence on their campaign trails.
While Piker holds some influence among young radicals, it appears his main impact lies in primary elections rather than general ones. It remains unlikely that he will defy the Democratic Party leadership. More likely, he will continue to align with them until his rhetoric can be strategically used again.
For Republicans, especially in Michigan’s race between El-Sayed and Republican Mike Rogers, Piker presents ample material despite his decreased visibility. If Piker decides to defy liberal expectations, conservative groups are likely to offer him platforms to speak, exposing what they see as the problematic ideologies of New Democrats.
