Hasan Piker, a far-left Twitch streamer, downplayed the anti-women and anti-LGBTQ stances of Hamas during a CNN interview on Sunday. As a rising figure within the Democratic Party, Piker was featured in ‘The Left Insurgency’, an episode of ‘The Whole Story With Anderson Cooper’. Reporter Donie O’Sullivan discussed Piker’s controversial comments.
O’Sullivan referenced a bipartisan House resolution that condemned Piker’s rhetoric. Some members of Congress claimed it supported the terror organization. Piker responded, ‘Well, I wouldn’t say I express support for all of Hamas’s actions’. He acknowledged that the Palestinian resistance has an internationally recognized right to resist, though they sometimes violate this right. He emphasized, ‘Palestinians do have a right to resist militarily’.
The House resolution highlighted Piker’s past comment, calling Hamas ‘a thousand times better than the fascist settler colonial apartheid state’ of Israel. He appeared on ‘Pod Save America’, reiterating this comparison. He identified as a ‘harm-reduction voter’, stating he would vote for Hamas over Israel, considering Hamas as a paramilitary organization that also acts as a political party.
O’Sullivan remarked that expressing support for Hamas could imply support for its human rights violations. ‘If you say you’re voting for Hamas, you’re voting for limited rights for women, you’re voting for homophobia’, O’Sullivan said. Piker responded, ‘It’s not an endorsement of their domestic policies’. He argued that every Palestinian regards Israeli occupation as the greatest challenge.
Fox News reached out to Piker for comment but received no immediate response. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) condemned Piker’s comments, stating that supporting a designated terrorist organization is unacceptable. The ADL criticized the Democratic officials’ silence on Piker’s remarks.
The American Jewish Committee (AJC) also condemned Piker, pointing to a past statement on his ‘Pod Save America’ appearance. AJC stressed that support for a terrorist organization endangers the Jewish community and undermines democratic values.
Piker, a socialist streamer, campaigned with several Democratic politicians and gained prominence as democratic socialists advance in elections. However, he faced criticism for controversial statements like ‘America deserved 9/11’ in 2019.
Some Democrats opposed Piker’s influence. James Carville, a longtime Democratic strategist, expressed his willingness to leave the party if it continued to embrace Piker. ‘Hasan Piker and James Carville are not going to be in the same political party’, Carville told Fox News, noting that most Democrats agree with him.
