Healthy Eating at Fast-Food Restaurants: Tips and Recommendations
Finding nutritious food options at fast-food restaurants can be tough, but it’s possible. A recent list on The Takeout website highlighted some of the healthier fast-food meals available. These choices include items that are lower in calories or contain more vitamins and minerals compared to other menu options. However, dietitian Dr. Kristin Struble stresses that ‘nutritious’ might be an exaggeration for these choices.
Nutritional Choices at Taco Bell and Chick-fil-A
Taco Bell’s Veggie Mexican Pizza topped the list, but Struble advises caution. She explains that the processed flour tortilla with preservatives might cause gut inflammation. Being vegetarian, it lacks sufficient protein, leaving you hungry soon after. Struble and Dr. Lauren Powell recommend Chick-fil-A’s Grilled Nuggets, paired with Kale Crunch Salad and a Fruit Cup, as a superior alternative.
Dr. Powell points out that while Chick-fil-A’s kale salad can be nutritious, the dressing, containing soybean oil and preservatives, requires careful consideration. Some individuals may also not tolerate kale well.
Burgers and Other Fast-Food Options
McDonald’s, Five Guys, and In-N-Out offer burgers that rank among the top ten choices when served without buns. Assuming minimal processing, these options provide protein and fat along with some lettuce.
Wendy’s baked potato is another decent choice, offering transparency in ingredients, according to Powell.
Salad and Protein-Rich Fast Food
Powell suggests choosing salads while being cautious about the dressing ingredients. She keeps olive oil at hand to dress her salads. She mentions that while not exciting, salads effectively fulfill dietary needs.
At Chipotle, protein-rich and fiber-dense options like salads with beans are preferred. Struble recommends avoiding processed carbs such as tortillas, chips, and white rice. Salsa and vegetables at Chipotle add to the nutritional value, providing vitamins and micronutrients, while guacamole offers fiber and healthy fats.
Healthy Eating Tips for Travelers
For those traveling, Powell suggests grocery stores might be better stops than fast-food spots for nutritious options. Additionally, this choice provides some physical activity, contrary to sitting in a drive-thru line.
Struble warns against ‘addictive’ food products at fast-food chains and gas stations, even if labeled gluten-free. Such items may deceive consumers into considering them healthy.
Experts advocate packing your meals in advance when possible. They also remind you that eating fast food should be a rare, necessary choice rather than a habit.
