A foiled potential terror plot at a U.S.-operated military base in the U.K. has raised alarms regarding the increased risks American facilities face in the region due to the ongoing conflict with Iran. Former British terrorism chief, Chris Phillips, discussed the situation with Newsweek.
Current Investigation
Counterterrorism detectives are investigating a possible plot linked to Iran after the arrest of five men near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire. This site has been used by U.S. bombers during the war the U.S. commenced against Iran on February 28. Investigators are assessing whether this was a state-backed attack connected to Iran, similar to past instances where Iran targeted U.S. military sites in the Middle East.
Reports from August indicated that U.S. facilities in Europe might also be at risk. Chris Phillips expressed concern about the persistent threat level against U.S. facilities in the U.K., stating, “The threat is real. It’s not going to go away.” He emphasized the ongoing danger, mentioning a “bomb factory” still possibly in operation.
Increased Security Measures
After the arrests, Gloucestershire police are questioning the five men, suspected of preparing acts of terrorism. They were initially charged with suspected explosives offenses. Unnamed sources indicated the suspects might be U.K. nationals in their 20s, residing in London suburbs.
British intelligence has recognized that hostile states, including Iran, have increased their proxy activities. Recent investigations have seen a 50% rise in such actions. Phillips highlighted the importance of determining whether the suspects were directed by Tehran or inspired by the situation in Iran.
“It’s not impossible that they were under surveillance,” Phillips noted, rejecting the idea that the men were closely monitored before their arrest. He suggested the response may have stemmed from local security awareness.
Residents detected changes in security around the military base, noticing enhanced security measures days before the arrests. However, the tip that led to the arrests came from a local farmer who spotted unusual activities.
U.S. Bases and Security in the U.K.
RAF Fairford, located near Swindon, is a base for the U.S. 501st Combat Support Wing and the 420th Air Base Squadron. Despite not joining the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran, the U.K. eventually permitted the U.S. to use its bases for defensive operations against Iranian missiles. This allowed American bombers to launch operations from RAF Fairford.
The U.S. has a military presence at other U.K. locations like RAF Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall. Security measures at these bases have reportedly increased, although official confirmation remains absent. The U.S. Department of Defense maintains its commitment to monitoring the situation and ensuring the safety of personnel and local communities.
