Hobart Quarterback Aleks Tatum Reflects on His Senior Night Performance
Hobart quarterback Aleks Tatum had expectations for his senior night. Yet, until the event, he might not have understood its magnitude. “Very emotional,” he commented. For Tatum, who is in his third season as the Brickies’ starter, the evening was a poignant experience. “I suppose every senior goes through it, but it really goes in the blink of an eye,” he reflected. As a sophomore, Tatum first took the field; now, years have passed, and he looks back at those formative times on special teams as a freshman. He has forged friendships with three classes of seniors and believes they were great role models.
Tatum’s performance during the Northwest Crossroads Conference game against Hanover Central demonstrates his growth. Completing 8 of 12 pass attempts for 210 yards and four touchdowns, he also rushed for 77 yards, leading the team to a 42-14 victory. Hobart’s record now stands at 5-2 overall and 3-2 in conference play. Previously, they experienced losses to Andrean and Lowell, prompting Tatum and his teammates to engage in introspection.
Tatum revealed he took a brief “mental break” before returning strong against Hanover Central. Hobart coach Eric Schreiber Jr. praised Tatum’s play, noting his composed, enjoyable approach during the first four weeks, but acknowledged challenges during the Andrean game. There, Tatum took on too much responsibility, rushing throws and failing to trust teammates. Schreiber noted, “We spent a long time this week just focusing on those things, getting back to how he was playing the first four weeks.” Tatum learned valuable lessons without impacting the postseason.
Entering the game, Tatum had completed 62 of 104 pass attempts for 1,255 yards and 13 touchdowns with only one interception. He rushed for 300 yards and five touchdowns too. Against Hanover Central, Tatum added varied touchdown passes to players like Miles White and Bryce Tolliver, showcasing his connection with teammates.
White, a versatile junior who caught one of Tatum’s passes, said, “He’s pretty much the leader.” Tatum’s leadership role extends beyond the field; he ensures everyone is well. Tolliver, set to join Northern Illinois, echoed praise for Tatum. “I love Aleks,” he expressed, highlighting their robust connection developed over time.
Coach Schreiber described Tatum as “the heart and soul” of the Brickies. Tatum’s influence reaches the community, attracting admiration, even from young fans seeking his autograph. Schreiber commended Tatum’s reflection over the weekend to refocus. Tatum shows accountability and coachability, influencing teammates positively.
Reflecting on his development, Tatum acknowledged growth beyond physical changes since his sophomore year when he weighed 175 pounds. He noted gradual maturity and the importance of balance. “You start to understand things,” he said. Leadership qualities stemmed from observing senior role models, transforming into a figure others look up to.
Tatum has received offers from Wabash and Trine while keeping interest from Grand Valley State and Findlay alive. “He’s still kind of going through the process,” Schreiber noted, recognizing the time needed for some players. Tatum remains committed to pursuing football opportunities, stating, “I love this game so much. It’s had such an impact on my life, and I’m not ready to give it up yet.”
