House Task Force Investigates Birth Tourism as Potential Criminal Conspiracy
The chairman of a House task force has raised concerns about companies assisting foreign nationals in traveling to the United States to give birth, suggesting that such actions could constitute a criminal conspiracy. Rep. Brandon Gill, R-Texas, who leads the House Oversight Committee’s Task Force on Defending Constitutional Rights and Exposing Institutional Abuses, reported to Fox News Digital about ongoing investigations through subpoenas issued to several ‘birth tourism companies.’
According to Gill, current law makes birth tourism illegal. He stated, ‘You cannot come into the United States for the purpose of giving birth.’ He elaborated that these businesses, by facilitating this process and potentially falsifying immigration or visa forms, might be engaged in a criminal conspiracy.
State Department regulations forbid the issuance of visitor visas to foreign nationals whose primary intent is to give birth in the U.S. This scrutiny became more pronounced after images spread of a billboard promoting birth services at the Women’s Center in Mission, Texas.
The mentioned Spanish-language billboard advertised services such as births and Caesarean sections for specific prices and included a contact number catering to international callers. Following this incident, the State of Texas initiated its investigation into the hospital.
Gill emphasized that birth tourism represents a clear violation of U.S. immigration laws, expressing his intent to address this issue substantively. He linked the situation to historical intent behind birthright citizenship, highlighting that it was meant for children of former slaves and not for facilitating illegal immigration.
Sen. Jim Banks, R-Ind., proposed legislation to address citizenship for children born to individuals not subject to U.S. jurisdiction, refreshing discussions on birthright citizenship initially propelled by an executive order from President Donald Trump.
In Gill’s view, legally clarifying these matters would safeguard the rights of U.S. citizens. He underscored the broader impact on American society, citing economic, social, and security risks posed by illegal immigration.
A spokesperson for Mission Regional Medical Center stated that their discontinued marketing campaign had unintended consequences. They stressed that the hospital, which prides itself on integrity, does not support unlawful activities, including birth tourism.
The spokesperson indicated that the campaign yielded minimal patient volume without financial gain. They assured compliance with state laws and confirmed that the majority of their patients are legal U.S. residents or citizens.
Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., Chairman of the greater Oversight Committee, criticized birth tourism for exploiting U.S. immigration laws. He and other lawmakers, including Gill and Banks, aim to pursue legislative measures to redefine birthright citizenship criteria following a Supreme Court indication.
