Houston Authorities Ready to Prosecute Federal Agents Over Fatal Shooting

The Harris County District Attorney, Sean Teare, is ready to prosecute federal immigration agents if criminal wrongdoing is discovered in the fatal shooting of a Mexican immigrant. The incident occurred on July 7, with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents involved. Teare emphasized the need for an independent investigation into the killing of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo.

Teare assured that his office has issued many subpoenas as part of the investigation. He stated, “As we go forward, and if the case and the evidence directs us that criminal wrongdoing occurred, we are more than prepared to file criminal charges against the people, regardless of whether or not they are federal agents or civilians.”

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) claims Araujo used his van as a weapon during a traffic stop, which led to the shooting. Araujo’s family disputes this, describing him as a long-time U.S. resident and a loving father.

Additionally, an ICE officer shot another driver in Maine shortly after Araujo’s incident. The FBI is now investigating the Houston event as a potential assault on a federal agent, while the DHS Office of Inspector General looks into it further.

Teare mentioned that possible charges under consideration include murder, criminally negligent homicide, and tampering with evidence. ICE hasn’t cooperated with local authorities, withholding essential information like the name of the agent who fired. “We have not received a single name of an ICE agent from ICE that was involved in that shooting,” Teare noted.

Highlighting his law enforcement background, Teare criticized ICE’s tactics as unprofessional and potentially negligent. “It appears from everything we’ve seen that either these agents are completely untrained, or intentionally putting themselves in situations where they can justify firing into cars,” he stated.

In response to the shootings, ICE has temporarily halted deportation agents from making vehicle stops pending further instructions.

Teare also filed for visas for the witnesses in the van with Araujo during the shooting. This measure prevents their deportation during the investigation. These three witnesses, including Araujo’s brother, remain crucial to the case.

Juan Proaño, CEO of the League of United Latin American Citizens, called for federal authorities to ensure the witnesses are not deported. “Lorenzo Salgado Araujo deserves a full and independent investigation,” Proaño asserted, emphasizing that witness accounts are vital for justice.
