On July 4, a critical announcement echoed across the Great American State Fair’s main stage. ‘For your safety, please back away from the stage,’ urged a voice—a necessary caution on a typical, sweltering day on the National Mall. This day marked the busiest period at the fair after a week marred by poor attendance and early closures due to heat and rain.

Organized by Freedom 250, a private-public collaboration, the fair was intended as a momentous celebration for President Donald Trump. As a significant part of the nation’s semiquincentennial festivities, it began with a UFC cage match on the White House lawn, celebrating Trump’s 80th birthday.

For a brief duration on the anniversary, it appeared that Trump and his supporters might outshine the critics—including liberal media and myself—who had criticized the fair and its attendance. Indeed, the area was bustling with visitors.
