Ian Somerhalder, known for his roles in television series “Lost” and “The Vampire Diaries,” has shifted his focus from acting to regenerative agriculture. The 47-year-old actor reveals that this transition has profoundly influenced his life.
In an interview with Fox News Digital, Somerhalder discussed his new involvement with regenerative agriculture after an impactful visit to Zimbabwe. He observed how regenerative farming could transform degraded landscapes and ecosystems.
“It shifted my life forever,” Somerhalder shared.
Somerhalder stars in the documentary “Groundswell,” directed by Josh and Rebecca Tickell. This film follows “Kiss the Ground” released in 2020 and “Common Ground” in 2023 as part of a series promoting regenerative agriculture.
Raised in Louisiana, Somerhalder comes from a lineage of farmers dating back to the 1700s. Having witnessed both regenerative methods and conventional farming within his family, he later encountered pioneer Allan Savory, who invited him to witness land restoration efforts in Zimbabwe.
The experience in Zimbabwe allowed Somerhalder to live at Savory’s project site, immerse in regenerative agriculture practices, and collect footage, contributing to the 2020 documentary “Kiss the Ground.”
Somerhalder’s trip became transformative at age 32, realizing the potential of grasslands as significant carbon absorbers.
While the filming involved challenges such as malaria pills leading to disturbing dreams, it offered insights into global environmental conditions.
Now focused on environmental advocacy, Somerhalder notes missing the camaraderie felt with coworkers during film and TV productions.
“I don’t miss the work,” Somerhalder said. “I miss the people.”
Somerhalder acknowledges Hollywood’s cultural shifts since his acting days. He feels that he left at an opportune time, investing energy in significant environmental endeavors.
Alongside his wife Nikki Reed, the couple embraces a sustainability-focused lifestyle at their farm. Reed actively shares his passion for the land.
Somerhalder highlights their farm life’s influence on their family approach, emphasizing the importance of reconnecting with nature.
Looking forward, he expresses hope that the next generation will continue engaging with regenerative agriculture and nature.
“The future is bright,” Somerhalder added.
