Global Tensions Disrupt Supply
Tensions involving Iran have interrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Ukrainian attacks on Russian refineries have strained fuel exports further. These events impact the diesel supply significantly.
Record High Diesel Prices
The national average price for diesel has reached an all-time high of $5.85 per gallon, reports AAA. This surpasses the previous high from June 2022 when prices surged after Russia invaded Ukraine.
“Diesel powers much of the industrial supply chain via the ‘three t’s’: trains, tractors, and trucks,” said Patrick De Haan, petroleum analyst at GasBuddy.
On the eve of the Iran conflict, diesel was $3.76 per gallon. The $2 increase affects transportation and farming heavily, with costs trickling down into everyday goods and services.
Economic Impact
Around 90% of 500,000 U.S. school buses run on diesel, stretching district budgets amid soaring prices. Inflation is affecting several sectors, as highlighted by a 3.4% increase in the Consumer Price Index over the past year.
Energy price hikes strain budgets, notably for lower-income households. Supply chain pressures and limited exports from Asian refineries, combined with Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil facilities, constrain global diesel supplies further.
Jet Fuel and Refinery Adjustments
Jet fuel prices have increased since the conflict began, prompting U.S. refineries to produce more, thus leaving less diesel available in the market.
“Refineries have opted to produce more jet fuel,” explained Jaime Brito, head of Dow Jones Energy. This choice impacts diesel availability and prices.
Diesel’s Role in the Economy
Diesel fuels the industrial supply chain, moving goods from farms to supermarkets. It is refined differently from gasoline, adjusting to various engines and tasks.
Future Price Influences
The price of diesel may remain elevated due to seasonal factors. It typically rises in the fall for harvest season, powering agricultural equipment. With winter approaching, heating oil demand increases; chemically similar to diesel, their prices often rise in tandem.
