Interior Secretary Doug Burgum has responded to a troubling pattern of vandalism at the National Mall. The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool is among the damaged sites, suffering significant harm.
Burgum spoke about restoration efforts and security measures during a ‘Fox & Friends Weekend’ segment. He confirmed the arrest of seven individuals involved in the vandalism. He stated, ‘These acts are an attack on our country and offenders will be prosecuted fully.’
When people are attacking the Reflecting Pool, it is akin to attacking our nation. These sacred monuments will see justice served.
Burgum described the vandalism, noting that a 350-foot-long gash was slashed into the pool’s industrial rubber liner. Images revealed numerous anti-Trump graffiti, including the markings ‘8647,’ interpreted as either a call to violence or to remove the president.
Responding to the vandalism, President Donald Trump commented on the deliberate targeting of the newly restored Reflecting Pool. ‘A 350-foot scar was made in the side of the Reflecting Pool—these individuals aim to destroy our country,’ he remarked.
Despite efforts to restore and enhance the nation’s capital, the vandalism occurred as preparations for America’s 250th anniversary are underway. Burgum detailed that over 50 parks and circles were restored, 48 monuments repaired, 22 fountains returned to service, and approximately 1,700 lights fixed throughout the National Mall.
To protect the Reflecting Pool, fencing has been installed, coinciding with an investigation into the damage. This preparation is part of July 4th festivities, which will feature fireworks around the monument.
