Interior Secretary Doug Burgum has voiced strong condemnation of recent vandalism at the National Mall, targeting key sites like the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. Significant damage has been reported, prompting urgent restoration efforts and intensified security measures. Authorities have arrested seven individuals involved in the acts.
President Donald Trump, along with the Interior Department, has declared a technological victory over ongoing algae issues in the Reflecting Pool. Trump shared images on Truth Social showing the pool’s clear water and the Washington Monument reflected in it. This achievement is credited to advanced nanobubbler technology and cleanup efforts by the National Park Service.
On Sunday, Trump issued a ‘Wanted’ poster for vandals and sought public assistance to identify suspects connected to a Destruction of Government Property investigation. The U.S. Park Police is actively working on the case.
Former Olympian David Hearn has been indicted regarding the vandalism. Trump praised the progress in algae cleanup and ongoing prosecution efforts. The Reflecting Pool, now clear, marks a historic turnaround after frequent algae issues since 1922.
Greg Wischer, Interior’s deputy assistant secretary, highlighted the success of the nanobubbler technology. Cleanup efforts include vacuuming dead algae from the pool’s base, likening this to past military victories.
The technology and cleanup have been hailed as overcoming previous challenges, especially under past administrations, such as Obama’s, where algae problems persisted massively.
Trump shared information via the U.S. Interior Press social media, underscoring the technological breakthrough. This success is expected to be visible to visitors during July 4th festivities.
Burgum mentioned the structural damages, focusing on repair strategies that may avoid full draining of the Reflecting Pool due to the strategic location of the gashes.
While critics point to refurbishment costs, Burgum emphasized vandalism as a primary cause. He noted historical resilience against vandalism and mentioned various security installations around the Lincoln Memorial.
The National Park Service aims to maintain the pool’s current state, supporting celebrations for America’s 250th anniversary.
