Police in Northern California are examining the circumstances surrounding the death of a 40-year-old New York Times executive, who was fatally shot by his in-laws in a parking lot over the weekend.
Officers discovered Jonathan McKinsey, a resident of Dublin, California, with gunshot wounds in a parking lot. He was declared dead at the scene. McKinsey, employed as the director of engineering for New York Times Games, had been with the company for over three years.
According to a police news release, a Dublin police sergeant, while driving near the local sports complex on Saturday afternoon, noticed a man lying in the parking lot. This man was later identified as McKinsey. During this time, witnesses were present in the area, as reported by local news outlets.
As the sergeant investigated, police dispatchers received 911 calls reporting the incident. Dublin resident Kevin Stein, a witness, told KTVU-TV, “This place is busy on a Saturday. It’s incredible that they’d just do that right in front of everybody.”
According to police, McKinsey’s in-laws were identified as the perpetrators—Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both 77, residents of Dublin. Authorities arrested them nearby on suspicion of murder, and they were taken to Santa Rita Jail. Police do not suspect any other individuals and do not perceive a threat to public safety.
The Dublin Sports Grounds, initially closed for the investigation, has since been reopened to the public. The investigation into the shooting and the events leading to it continues.
