Federal investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding a fatal incident involving an Amazon cargo plane at Miami International Airport. The crash occurred on Sunday afternoon, and witnesses have begun sharing their accounts of the event.
One witness, Grace Mercado, recounted her experience. As she was traveling in a car with her partner, he voiced concern about a loud noise. “We hear a noise,” Mercado said. “And he goes, ‘Oh my goodness. Is that a plane crash?'” Upon looking up, she saw the plane had overshot the runway, crossed a street, and eventually halted. “It was extremely loud,” she described the sound. “It was like a shake. Honestly, I can’t compare it to anything else.”
She struggled to process the scene, describing the plane as engulfed in smoke. “It was just, it was like something from a movie. It was crazy.” Initial reports suggested no immediate presence of first responders, but they arrived swiftly. “There weren’t any ambulances or anything,” Mercado noted. “But they ended up there in under a minute. It was absolutely insane.”
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue reported that more than 60 units and roughly 200 personnel attended to the crash site. The first units arrived within seconds. Tragically, five people lost their lives, and five others sustained injuries.
“Our hearts are with the victims and their families following the tragic cargo plane crash,” Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said in a statement. They expressed their sorrow over the loss of life and offered thoughts and prayers to those affected.
After the crash, Mercado noted the absence of movement from the plane, except for heavy smoke. “It’s something you don’t see in real life,” she reflected. “So, it’s surreal.”
Authorities from the FAA and NTSB are conducting investigations to determine the cause of the crash. The identities of the victims have yet to be released.
