Iran Strikes Lead to Rising Oil Prices and Market Uncertainty

The end of the U.S.-Iran ceasefire is affecting oil markets, causing a surge in prices and uncertainty around future energy costs. On Tuesday, the United States announced strikes against Iran, responding to attacks on three commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz. By Wednesday, President Trump stated the ceasefire that halted months of conflict was ‘over,’ dismissing negotiations with Iran as unproductive.
The U.S. decided to execute further strikes, leading to a substantial increase in crude oil prices by Wednesday evening. The U.S. benchmark, West Texas Intermediate (WTI), reached around $75 per barrel, while Brent Crude rose to approximately $79, marking a significant climb from around $69 and $72, respectively, at the week’s start. However, these prices haven’t reached the highs seen during peak wartime, when they hit roughly $120 per barrel.
According to Robert Weiner, a professor of international business at George Washington University, the market anticipates possible disruptions in oil exports but remains adaptable toward changing circumstances that might mitigate the situation.
Ken Medlock from Rice University’s Baker Institute suggests oil prices may continue to rise if shipping through the critical Strait of Hormuz—adjacent to Iran—faces interruptions.
