Iran’s preparations for the 2026 World Cup in North America are marked by uncertainty. The national team faces visa issues, tense political circumstances, and changes to their schedule. Mehdi Taj, president of Iran’s soccer federation, has been pivotal in addressing these concerns.
In discussions with FIFA, Iran opted to alter their base from the United States to Mexico. This change minimizes their time in the U.S., amid tensions between the countries. Taj, a former Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps commander, blames the U.S. for the complications affecting Iran’s World Cup participation.
Iran qualified early for the tournament, which features 48 teams across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. It is the first World Cup with a host nation in conflict with a participant. These issues led Iranian officials to meet with FIFA’s top leaders to seek resolutions. The team has been training in Turkey, aiming to overcome these obstacles.
