Israeli Ambassador Criticizes NYC Mayor’s Remarks on Netanyahu

Israeli ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, criticized New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani for his comments regarding Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Mamdani demanded that federal authorities arrest Netanyahu upon his arrival in New York City, accusing him of being a “war criminal” and responsible for “genocide” against Palestinians. Netanyahu is set to address the United Nations General Assembly in September.

Danon described Mamdani’s remarks as “baseless” and “a joke,” urging the mayor to focus on local issues such as homelessness and public security. The New York City Mayor’s Office released a video on July 21 repeating Mamdani’s accusations against Netanyahu, alleging responsibility for numerous deaths and the targeting of medical facilities. Mamdani claimed Netanyahu blocked food and humanitarian aid, leading to suffering in Palestinian regions.

Danon countered these claims, emphasizing that humanitarian aid is regularly provided to Gaza. He accused Mamdani of spreading falsehoods and encouraged a look at current conditions in Gaza, asserting there are no humanitarian crises.

Mamdani acknowledges the city’s lack of legal authority to enforce the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court. He called on the federal government to join the ICC to pursue the warrant. Mamdani’s stance against Netanyahu and other individuals he considers “war criminals” raises questions about the city’s involvement in global legal matters.

Israeli officials denied Mamdani’s allegations and rejected the ICC’s jurisdiction. Danon dismissed Mamdani’s comments as political theatrics, noting the U.S. is not part of the ICC and thus not obliged to act on the arrest warrant.

Danon highlighted the necessity to focus on more pressing international issues rather than Mamdani’s controversial remarks. He emphasized Netanyahu’s intention to deliver his speech at the U.N. General Assembly despite any opposition.
