Star quarterback Jayden Daniels is experiencing online scrutiny even before the regular season begins. A recent decision by Daniels has sparked conversation across the internet. The New York Mets added to this discourse, joining others in mocking the Washington Commanders player.
Earlier this month, Daniels issued a cease-and-desist letter to LSU, his alma mater, regarding the use of his name, image, and likeness (NIL). The Mets took a playful jab at Daniels following their 4-1 victory over the Washington Nationals, both teams from the DMV area. In their post on X, the Mets quipped, “Stopped at 4 out of respect for Jayden Daniels.”
Daniels, who secured the Heisman Trophy in 2023 while at LSU, expressed dissatisfaction when LSU allowed DJ Pickett to wear his No. 5 jersey. Daniels’ camp considered this a sign of disrespect. To address the situation, Daniels posted a statement on social media, emphasizing his gratitude towards LSU and expressing hope for a private resolution.
“I have been locked in on training camp and that’s been my number one focus,” Daniels stated. “I have a lot of gratitude for my time at LSU and I’m proud of what my teammates and I accomplished there. Obviously there are issues to be worked out between my team and LSU and my hope is that it will get done privately.”
Additionally, Daniels clarified that his primary focus remains on his career with the Commanders. StubHub, a popular ticketing platform, joined the online jesting, announcing they will refrain from selling tickets in groups of five to respect Daniels.
As the online commentary continues, Daniels hopes the upcoming regular season will shift the focus to on-field action rather than digital critiques.
