Jim Thornton, the announcer of ‘Wheel of Fortune,’ has responded through his lawyer after being suspended this week. According to his attorney, Thornton, aged 61, did not engage in any illegal activities, was not arrested, and is not facing any criminal charges.
Sony Pictures Television Studios stated they are aware of allegations against Thornton and have suspended him from the show while an investigation is conducted. They are in the process of recasting.
Thornton has been the voice for ‘Wheel of Fortune’ since 2011.
The incident in question occurred during an American Airlines flight in May, where a passenger complained about Thornton’s behavior. Law enforcement met the flight at Los Angeles International Airport.
American Airlines confirmed that flight 1276 was met by law enforcement at LAX after a customer reported concerns. Thornton’s lawyer stated that after being questioned for less than five minutes, authorities determined no wrongdoing by Thornton, allowing him to leave.
Jim Thornton succeeded Charlie O’Donnell, the long-time announcer, after O’Donnell’s death in 2010.
Before joining ‘Wheel of Fortune,’ Thornton lent his voice to various entertainment projects, including shows like ‘Celebrity Death Match,’ ‘The Cleveland Show,’ and ‘Monsters, Inc.’ He has also been an announcer for ‘The Price is Right’ and ‘Jeopardy!’ and worked with KNX 1070 news radio since 1985.
Throughout his career, Thornton has received prestigious awards including the Edward R. Murrow Award and an Emmy, illustrating his contribution and recognition in the field.
