Jorge Messi, Father of Lionel Messi, Passes Away at 68
Jorge Messi, father of renowned footballer Lionel Messi, has passed away at the age of 68. The Argentine Football Association (AFA) confirmed this sad news. The Messi family had previously disclosed that Jorge was experiencing health issues and was receiving medical attention. On June 18, during the World Cup, Lionel Messi was visibly emotional after scoring his first goal in a 3-0 victory for Argentina against Algeria. He stated that his reaction was due to experiencing some challenging and complicated days.
Jorge Messi played a pivotal role in Lionel’s career, acting as his agent and business manager. Although many advisors came and went from Messi’s team, Jorge remained a constant presence, closely linked with his son, sharing a unique bond and understanding.
Claudio Tapia, President of the AFA, expressed profound sadness and sorrow on behalf of the association. A minute’s silence will be observed at all matches in Argentina throughout the weekend. The AFA extended heartfelt condolences and unwavering support to the Messi family during this difficult time.
“We would like to offer our support to the whole family at this difficult time and send them our most heartfelt, warm and affectionate thoughts. Stay strong!”
Former club FC Barcelona and their rivals, Real Madrid, also paid tribute to Jorge Messi. Jorge’s efforts were not only pivotal in Lionel’s career but played a significant role during Messi’s formative years. Jorge worked as a supervisor at a metal factory in Rosario before dedicating himself to supporting his son’s burgeoning career. His involvement with Lionel’s soccer journey began at the local Grandoli soccer club before Lionel moved to Newell’s Old Boys, Rosario’s prominent club.
When Lionel was 13, he required treatment for a hormone condition affecting his growth, which the family could not financially support. In September 2000, Jorge and Lionel traveled to Spain for a trial at FC Barcelona, and three months later, in December, a contract was famously agreed upon with Barcelona director Charly Rexach, etched on a napkin in the presence of advisors Josep Maria Minguella and Horacio Gaggioli.
Jorge’s efforts were foundational to Lionel securing his position at Barcelona, which burgeoned into one of the most illustrious careers in football history. Lionel made his debut for Barcelona’s first team in 2004. He left the club during its financial struggles in 2021, moving to Paris Saint-Germain. Afterward, Lionel joined Inter Miami as club captain, where he continues his legacy.
Jorge Messi leaves behind a legacy of dedication and support, having significantly impacted the world of football through his son’s career.
