A federal judge expressed anger on Monday regarding the removal of hundreds of trees from a historic golf course in Washington, D.C. The criticism was directed at officials from the Trump administration. The judge accused the government of damaging its credibility with the court.
U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes, during a hearing about East Potomac Golf Links, raised her voice repeatedly. The National Park Service began removing trees there as part of renovation plans. Judge Reyes, appointed by former President Joe Biden, had ordered the government to notify her before significant demolition could proceed.
Judge Reyes noted that over 500 trees were removed without proper notice. She claimed this action undermined the government’s credibility in the case. According to social media reports, Reyes stated, “I trusted you all not to do precisely what you have done,” expressing her disbelief regarding the government’s approach.

Justice Department lawyers claimed to be unaware of the tree-cutting plan details. However, Judge Reyes dismissed their lack of knowledge as unacceptable.
Judge Reyes has ordered a halt to the tree removal until at least 7 a.m. on Tuesday. She warned that any breach of this order, even by a couple of seconds, would lead to contempt proceedings.
The controversy involves the Trump administration’s plans to update the 106-year-old public course into a championship-level golf venue.
