Judge Dismisses Alex Murdaugh’s Lawsuit for Legal Fees

A federal judge in Columbia, South Carolina, dismissed a lawsuit by Alex Murdaugh seeking $600,000 in legal fees from former court clerk Becky Hill. Murdaugh claimed Hill’s misconduct during his trial violated his right to a fair trial in the deaths of his wife and son.

Murdaugh was initially found guilty by a jury, but the state Supreme Court overturned the convictions earlier this year. The court ruled that Hill had improperly influenced the jury by suggesting Murdaugh’s guilt and questioning the reliability of his defense testimony.

The judge, Richard Gergel, stated that Murdaugh’s legal claim was flawed because the expenses for his defense were necessary regardless of Hill’s actions. Gergel explained that Hill was not involved in launching the criminal charges against Murdaugh.

Murdaugh’s claim “lacks a causal connection between the funds expended for his defense in the first trial and Defendant’s misconduct,” Gergel wrote. “Defendant had no role in the initiation of criminal charges against Plaintiff.”

After the ruling, Murdaugh’s attorneys quickly filed a notice to appeal.

Murdaugh used $600,000 from a retirement account to cover legal fees for his initial trial. He expects additional costs for his retrial next year, a case that has attracted significant attention with a streaming miniseries, books, and podcasts.

Though his murder convictions were overturned, Murdaugh remains imprisoned. He pleaded guilty to embezzling about $12 million from clients and is concurrently serving a 40-year federal sentence and a 27-year state sentence for these financial crimes. His retrial on murder charges is set for April.

Investigators reported that Murdaugh had a severe opioid addiction. They suggested his financial frauds were unraveling, leading him to murder his wife and son to deflect attention and buy time to resolve his issues.
