A federal judge who ordered the removal of former President Donald Trump’s name from the Kennedy Center is married to an attorney with significant ties to Trump’s critics. This decision has led Trump to argue the existence of conflicts of interest.
U.S. District Court Judge Christopher Cooper found that the Kennedy Center board overstepped its authority when it attempted to rename the institution. He stated that only Congress can rename it, as established in the original statute, which honors President John F. Kennedy.
Trump criticized Cooper on social media, suggesting that his wife, Amy Jeffress, influenced the decision. Jeffress, an attorney, has represented several high-profile individuals who have opposed Trump. Some of her past clients include former FBI lawyer Lisa Page and entities related to investigations against Trump’s administration.
Jeffress also acted as counsel to the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. Her involvement in these legal matters has fueled Trump’s claims of bias. Trump noted that Jeffress does not use the ‘Cooper’ name professionally, implying attempts to conceal any conflict of interest.
Critics further accuse Judge Cooper of potential conflicts due to his wife’s professional associations. Previously, during Special Counsel John Durham’s investigation, Cooper faced similar scrutiny over his wife’s involvement in representing Lisa Page, connected to the FBI’s Crossfire Hurricane investigation.
Despite the controversy, Judge Cooper has retained his position on the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. Appointed by President Obama, he has served since 2014.
Trump also pointed out Jeffress’ role in legal actions opposing him, including representing writer E. Jean Carroll. Since 2025, Jeffress has acted as President Joe Biden’s personal attorney in legal challenges related to classified materials.
The marriage between Cooper and Jeffress, officiated by now-Attorney General Merrick Garland, contributes to the perception of interconnected legal and political circles.
Fox News reached out to several parties involved, including Judge Cooper and Amy Jeffress, for comments regarding the situation.
