Justin Cooper was thrust into the limelight at a young age, gaining recognition for his role alongside Jim Carrey in the 1997 comedy, Liar Liar. Speaking on the ‘Not So Little Rascals’ podcast, Cooper opened up about the challenges of early fame.
Cooper credited his mother with shielding him from the harsher realities of the entertainment industry. He shared that despite her efforts, unsettling experiences, such as receiving prison mail from fans, were part of his childhood. ‘Dudes in jail talking about how they’re such a big fan of me…and you’re such a cute kid,’ he recounted.
Cooper highlighted his mother’s diligence in ensuring his safety during his career. He mentioned she was always present on set, refusing to leave him alone with others. According to Cooper, this protective behavior was quite different from the approach of many acting parents of that era.
Reflecting on specific incidents, he recalled a situation with the famously outspoken comic, Don Rickles. Cooper’s mother approached Rickles while filming Dennis the Menace Strikes Again, insisting on no foul language in front of her son.
As Cooper reached his teenage years, he described acting responsibilities becoming burdensome. He recounted lengthy car rides to auditions and the pressure of juggling homework with acting commitments. Eventually, his mother supported his decision to step away from acting, despite any potential disappointment due to her involvement in his career.
Cooper fondly remembered his time on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and the various projects he was part of in the ’90s. However, as he transitioned into high school, his relationship with his mother faced challenges. He mentioned experimenting with marijuana and the subsequent tension it caused when his mother discovered it.
Throughout his acting career, Cooper appreciated the unwavering support from his mother. She dedicated her time to accompany him to auditions and help with his preparations.
