The rivalry between Kansas and Missouri, historically known as the Border War, took a contentious turn this weekend during their celebrated college football matchup. Kansas initiated a verbal exchange by releasing a provocative hype video before the Friday game against Missouri.
The video, meant to boost team morale, included typical elements like music and highlights but controversially spotlighted Missouri’s historical ties to slavery during the Civil War. This integration of historical imagery pushing slavery and Civil War was unexpected and quickly went viral with over 12,000 reposts and 34 million views.
While the video cast Missouri as the villains and Kansas as the heroes, featuring historical figures like Abolitionist John Brown and Bushwhacker leader William Quantrill, it drew wide attention and mixed responses.
“I was a little disappointed,” Missouri’s head coach Eli Drinkwitz expressed. “Especially on 9/11 when we need more unity now than ever before.” He emphasized that the matter should be settled on the football field, not through historical grievances.
The game ended in favor of Missouri, winning 38-21 after a tied score at halftime. Missouri delivered a final statement with aggressive play, scoring a touchdown late in the game even when leading, spurred by the hyped video’s provocations.
Though engaging in a heated exchange through social media, Drinkwitz expressed remorse over Kansas’ approach, preferring that focus remains on fostering rivalry on the field rather than invoking historical disputes.
College football thrives on rivalry games, and fans eagerly engage in the drama they bring. This event exemplifies the intense emotions and unique nature of sports rivalries.
