Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, a Democrat, recently defended his stance on transgender issues during an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union.” Beshear spoke on his decision to veto a bill that would bar transgender students from participating in girls’ and women’s sports. Beshear emphasized that his party prioritizes compassion and empathy. He stated, “We don’t throw anybody under the bus” and expressed concern about government intervention in sports.
The veto in question concerns Kentucky’s Senate Bill 83, which aimed to restrict male students from joining girls’ athletic teams from sixth grade through college. Despite Beshear’s veto, the Republican-controlled legislature later overrode it. Beshear noted at the time that Kentucky had only one transgender athlete. He described existing regulations by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association as sufficient, emphasizing fairness without undue government involvement.
Republican National Committee National Press Secretary Natalie Baldassarre criticized Beshear’s record, suggesting it prioritizes transgender policies over female athletes’ safety. She accused Beshear of trading girls’ safety for applause, referring to his policies as “woke.” In contrast, Beshear mentioned that his opposition stemmed from broader concerns about parental rights and mental health, particularly regarding provisions that were not directly about sports.
Senate Bill 150, another piece of legislation Beshear vetoed in 2023, restricted transgender medical treatments for minors and enforced school policies regarding restroom and locker room use based on biological sex. This veto was also overridden by Republican lawmakers.
Beshear argued that athletes should compete according to the sex listed on their birth certificate, with certain medical pathways available for transgender athletes. He emphasized that Kentucky’s existing rules safeguarded competitive integrity.
Beshear’s comments reflect ongoing debates over transgender policies in sports and education, especially as lawmakers and activists focus on ensuring fairness while navigating complex social issues.
Fox News Digital reached out to Beshear for further comment but did not receive an immediate response. CJ Womack, an associate editor at Fox News, analyzed Beshear’s policy stance. With experience in political analysis and reporting, CJ continues to highlight how journalism impacts politics and culture.
