Jalen Brunson played a key role in Game 1 of the NBA Finals, driving the New York Knicks to a series-opening victory. Despite a challenging performance on the court, Victor Wembanyama made a significant impact for the San Antonio Spurs in his debut finals game.
The upcoming Game 2 on Friday night in San Antonio is crucial. The Spurs aim to even the series before it moves to New York, while the Knicks are trying to become the first team since Houston in 1995 to open the NBA Finals with two road wins. The game tips off at 8:42 p.m. EDT and will be broadcast on ABC. Currently, the Spurs are favored by 6.5 points.
In Game 1, Brunson scored 30 points, helping the Knicks come back from a 14-point third-quarter deficit and finish with an 11-0 run. Though Brunson received much praise, the contributions of others like Josh Hart were indispensable. While Hart scored only three points, his performance was highlighted by 15 rebounds, six assists, and four steals. Since these stats began tracking, only Larry Bird achieved similar numbers in a finals game back in 1986.
“His energy is just relentless. It doesn’t stop,” Brunson said about Hart, his former teammate from Villanova. “I mean, he eats candy all the time. That tells you who he is. He’s a big kid with an absurd amount of energy.”
The Knicks aim to increase their playoff winning streak to 13 games, which would be the second-longest in a single NBA season. The Golden State Warriors hold the record with 15 consecutive playoff wins in 2017.
Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox commented, “We know it’s a long series. Obviously you want to win every game at home, but it doesn’t always happen that way. We try to go in and fix what we need to fix. Obviously, we want a different outcome.”
