Latino History and Politics in Orange County: Anaheim’s Latest Controversy
Latino History Discussions at Chapman University
Every fall, a course on Latino History of Orange County is taught at Chapman University, spanning from the Portola expedition to the contemporary political scene. This includes a focus on Huntington Beach’s MAGA Latina councilmember, Gracey Van Der Mark. Recent lectures have addressed the persistent themes of anti-Mexican political tactics in the region, which tend to spread across the nation. Unfortunately, updates to these lectures are frequent, as new incidents continue to surface. A recent presentation highlighted potential developments in Anaheim by 2026.
Allegations Against Anaheim Mayor
A recent lawsuit claims that Anaheim mayor Ashleigh Aitken referred to her chief of staff as a “dirty Mexican.” This allegation adds to the area’s long history of anti-Mexican sentiment. The case was initially reported by Gabriel San Román, who detailed that the mayor’s chief of staff, Berenice Ballinas, faced ongoing harassment and discriminatory treatment. Legal documents reveal various incidents attributed to the mayor’s conduct, often occurring under the influence of alcohol.
Ballinas described specific events, including those at Disneyland’s Club 33 and Angel Stadium. Igraine Aitken allegedly made a derogatory remark about Ballinas’ ethnicity in front of the then-city attorney, Jim Vanderpool. In another instance, she purportedly expressed her reluctance to have Ballinas drive her vehicle due to her ethnicity.
Political Implications and Response
Mayor Aitken, who is seeking reelection, has formally denied these accusations during a council meeting. Nevertheless, criticism from the community and media persists. The allegations are now part of a larger narrative, with examples such as Proposition 187, attempts to grant immigration enforcement powers to local police, and former statements by officials echoing similar biases toward Mexican Americans.
Anaheim’s Historical Context
Anaheim and other parts of Orange County have a historical pattern of anti-Mexican policies and rhetoric. Segregation in schools, parks, and swimming facilities endured until the 1950s. Notable was a lawsuit by a local school district against Mexico in 1999, seeking compensation for educating undocumented immigrants’ children.
This continuing cycle of discrimination contributes to persistent negative attitudes. It influences public perceptions, affecting trust even in the face of denial by public officials like Aitken.
Reactions and Investigation
In response to the accusation, the Anaheim City Council has announced an independent investigation into the claims. On social media, Aitken admitted to her struggles with alcohol and expressed disappointment over the situation with Ballinas, likening her to a valuable ally.
Despite the controversy, the local liberal political scene has yet to demand her resignation with the intensity anticipated if a Republican official were in question. Aitken recently addressed a labor awards event, drawing enthusiasm from attendees.
