LeBron James Joins Philadelphia 76ers on Two-Year Deal

The Philadelphia 76ers have officially signed LeBron James to a two-year contract valued at $8 million. A simple photo posted online confirmed James’ addition to the team, showing his blue No. 23 jersey hanging in a locker. The photo included a crown, referencing his ‘King’ nickname.

James, a four-time NBA MVP and the league’s all-time leading scorer, announced his decision on social media. He stated this would be his ‘last decision’ after contemplating retirement. James said, ‘I believe I can help make the Philadelphia 76ers a championship team and I am so excited to energize a new fan base and start this incredible journey one last time.’

The soon-to-be 42-year-old shared workout videos over the weekend, expressing his readiness for the challenge as he joins a team featuring stars like Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and Jaylen Brown. The 76ers last secured an NBA championship in 1983 and have not progressed past the Eastern Conference’s second round since 2001.

Team owner Josh Harris shared his anticipation, saying, ‘I cannot wait to see LeBron alongside our talented roster as we work to deliver a championship for Philly.’ Last season, the 76ers ended with a 45-37 record and were swept in the playoffs by the New York Knicks. James aims to change the team’s fortunes, similar to how he led the Cavaliers to a title, ending Cleveland’s 56-year championship drought in 2016.

Over his career, James has achieved exceptional accolades: 22-time All-Star, 21-time All-NBA selection, four-time NBA Finals MVP, and three-time All-Star Game MVP. He was a member of the NBA’s 75th anniversary team and averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists last season. His career averages stand at 26.8 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 7.4 assists per game over more than 1,600 games.

James began his career with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2003, moving to Miami where he secured two NBA titles. He returned to Cleveland and led them to their historic title in 2016 then joined the Los Angeles Lakers, winning another championship in 2020. Remarkably, he is the first to earn NBA Finals MVP honors with three different teams.

James will reunite with Sixers president Mike Gansey, who was recently hired after the departure of Daryl Morey. Gansey and James have a history dating back to their time as top high school basketball players in Ohio. Gansey praised James, saying, ‘He is a consummate professional, the ultimate competitor, and a tireless worker. But he is also an incredible person with natural leadership traits.’ Gansey was Ohio’s Mr. Basketball runner-up to James in 2001.
