LeBron James enters free agency after eight years, attracting significant attention for what might be his concluding act in professional basketball. According to Alex Schiffer from Front Office Sports, only the Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors are in serious contention.
Multiple Western Conference executives told Front Office Sports they expect James to sign with the Warriors over the Cavaliers for his 24th NBA season,
Schiffer reported.
Despite predictions favoring Cleveland, with notable voices like Bill Simmons describing the potential return as a ‘done deal,’ others within the league see the Warriors as strong contenders. A differing opinion exists, but most executives agree that he will likely choose between these two teams.
An Akron native and the top draft pick by the Cavaliers in 2003, James famously moved to the Miami Heat in 2010, winning two consecutive titles in 2012 and 2013. He returned to Cleveland in 2014, culminating in their historic victory over the Warriors in the 2016 finals after trailing 3-1 in the series.
In July 2018, James joined the Los Angeles Lakers, securing another championship by 2020. Announcing his departure from the Lakers on June 30, he expressed gratitude via social media.
Many feel James’s career would come full circle by returning to the Cavaliers. However, playing alongside Stephen Curry and Draymond Green with a renowned coach like Steve Kerr adds to the appeal of choosing the Warriors.
