Lila Grace’s Journey Through Scoliosis and Surgery

Lila Grace from Denver, Colorado, shared her journey from scoliosis diagnosis to spinal fusion surgery with Newsweek. Diagnosed at 12, her condition involved scoliosis and kyphosis, causing her spine to curve abnormally. Initially, the curve was 30 degrees, above the 10-degree threshold for scoliosis. However, it progressed rapidly.

Grace explained that doctors initially monitored the curve, which eventually reached 70 degrees, necessitating surgery since bracing was not viable. Doctors warned that without intervention, she would be crippled by adulthood due to the quick progression. Lila shared a TikTok video (@learningbeinglila) of her at 15, preparing for the surgery, noting it was described as “the most painful surgery.” The procedure, spinal fusion, aims to correct severe spinal curves by joining vertebrae with metal rods, screws, and bone grafts.

“I was honestly very excited for the surgery,” Grace stated. “I had been dealing with worsening chronic pain and was desperate for relief.”

Despite her anticipation, she feared paralysis, a rare outcome but a possibility she couldn’t ignore. She kept her concerns quiet to prevent upsetting her family. Her emotions surfaced only when taken to the operating room, comforted by a doctor’s presence.

Recovery was challenging. Grace spent two months largely unable to move, relearning to walk. Her mother assisted with daily tasks, highlighting the mental struggle of losing independence. “To rely on those around me was extremely rough for me mentally,” she recounted. Despite ongoing pain, she believes the surgery was the best decision, offering reassurance that her condition won’t worsen significantly.

Posting the old surgical footage was a personal decision, prompted by the recent passing of her grandmother, featured in the video. Grace aims to support others, including her middle school students facing similar challenges. Her advice is clear:

“Mindset is everything,” Grace advised. “Encourage yourself and don’t hesitate to lean on those around you.”
