The 2026 Winter Olympics witnessed an unforgettable moment when skier Lindsey Vonn, at 41 years old, performed bravely after sustaining a knee injury in a crash. Her effort was commendable, yet she faced another serious crash just 13 seconds into her run during the women’s downhill final.
Five months following this incident, Vonn is still grappling with her injuries. At the 2026 ESPYs in New York City, she shared her ongoing challenges with People. “It’s been a very slow process,” Vonn admitted. “It’s been five months since I’ve been able to actually go to the gym in a somewhat meaningful way. And walking is actually still really hard for me. My ankle is still broken.”
Despite the adverse outcome, Vonn’s decision to compete remains a highlight of bravery at the Games. Her journey from a wheelchair and crutches to standing on her own was significantly emotional for her. Recalling how she sustained a completely ruptured ACL prior to the Olympics highlights the extent of her determination.
“I was in a wheelchair for so long, I was on crutches for so long,” Vonn shared. “It was honestly almost three and a half months that I was unable to walk unassisted. I got very emotional when I was able to walk on my own.”
This week, Vonn provided an update on her recovery process, acknowledging the long journey ahead. Her resilience and dedication continue to inspire as she works towards her recovery.
