This two-story house now serves as a site for visitors to leave flags, messages, and tributes dedicated to the celebrated soccer player. The surrounding fence is festooned with flags from various countries, some adorned with words of gratitude, acknowledging Messi as the “greatest” and appreciating his demonstration that dreams can be realized through “humility and hard work.”
“It’s beautiful,” remarked Nathan Shanely from Michigan, who visited to capture photos. “The hope and joy that one individual brings through his sport is evident in these flags.”
In his efforts to reinvent Rosario as a tourist hub, Messi’s influence is central. Once overshadowed by drug-related violence, Rosario is striving to transform its image. Officials aim to leverage its most famous resident to attract international visitors. “We may not have towering mountains or renowned beaches,” stated Bruno Rearte of Ente Turistico Rosario. “But we have Messi, and he is introducing Rosario to the world.”
Positioned in the Pampa region along the Paraná River, Rosario is a significant port city known for beef and soy exports. Unfortunately, its strategic location has also attracted drug traffickers. Recent efforts have reduced crime rates by enhancing prison security and deploying hundreds of federal police officers, restoring safety and fostering a more inviting environment for tourism.
Lionel Messi left Rosario at 13 to join Barcelona’s youth academy, shaping his path to global fame. Today, the city honors him through numerous vibrant murals and sites marking his early years. Landmarks include his former La Bajada home and Club Atlético Grandoli, where his soccer journey began. According to a sign at Grandoli, Messi played his first match by chance at age 4, joining an older team and scoring the winning goal.

Annual events such as the October rock festival, the art-gallery-lined waterfront, and pedestrian-friendly boulevards enhance its appeal. “We’re a walkable city,” Rearte shared. “Small, yet offering the amenities of a large city.”
Restoring Rosario’s image demands time and trust. Hostel owner Flor Wolf expresses optimism, hoping visitors see the city’s true character alongside its Messi heritage. “Visitors will discover a welcoming place,” she conveyed. “Even Messi vacations here.”
