The Los Angeles Dodgers have strengthened their lineup by acquiring pitcher Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers. This move comes as the Dodgers aim to secure another World Series title. ESPN reported the trade on Saturday night, indicating Skubal’s switch in exchange for three prospects sent to Detroit.
Tarik Skubal has been a standout performer, earning back-to-back American Cy Young awards with the Tigers. As a 29-year-old player nearing free agency, Skubal underwent arthroscopic elbow surgery in May but returned to the mound in mid-June, missing only six months.
In the trade, the Tigers received outfielder Zyhir Hope along with right-hand relievers Brady Smith and River Ryan. Zyhir Hope is recognized by MLB as the No. 25 prospect. Skubal’s remaining salary amounts to $32 million; however, due to the timing of the trade, he won’t receive a qualifying offer from the Dodgers.
Fans across the league might find the Dodgers’ acquisition frustrating. This frustration stems from the Dodgers acquiring such a significant player for only three prospects, a deal comparable to what other contenders might have offered.
Detroit fans are particularly puzzled by the move, considering the Tigers are just 2.5 games shy of an American League Wild Card spot. Meanwhile, the Dodgers have a strong 10-game lead in the National League West, holding a 69-42 record.
Skubal’s last game for the Tigers was on July 29, and his debut for the Dodgers might occur soon. The Dodgers are set to face the Chicago Cubs in a three-game series starting Monday.
