The Los Angeles Rams are set to launch their 2026 season on Thursday, facing off against the San Francisco 49ers. This game, taking place in Melbourne, Australia, is notable as the NFL’s first matchup in the country.
A current focal point for the Rams is the condition of their star wide receiver, Puka Nacua. Nacua has been unable to play following a psoas injury sustained during a team practice on August 11. The psoas, a crucial muscle linking the lower spine to the hip, is vital for leg movement, posing a significant challenge for an active player like Nacua.
“You don’t hear that very often,” observed ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, noting the uncommon nature of the psoas injury. “They held him out for a few weeks, taking it easy with him, but he’s been back in stride this week, no setbacks.”
Despite this setback, there’s optimism. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported encouraging developments about Nacua’s recovery. Rams head coach Sean McVay also confirmed that Nacua is expected to play in the season opener against the 49ers.
This year is particularly significant for Nacua as he heads into his fourth season. Known as the driving force of the Rams’ offense, he consistently faces high expectations. Yet, this season holds increased importance because of contract considerations. While he’s established as a top receiver, securing a long-term contract remains pending. His peers, like Jaxon Smith-Njigba and others, have secured contracts recently.
Drafted as a fifth-round pick from BYU in 2023, Nacua has accumulated impressive accolades. He boasts two Pro Bowl appearances and was named first-team All-Pro last season after catching 129 passes for 1,715 yards and ten touchdowns. Alongside Davante Adams, Nacua makes up one of the league’s most formidable wide receiver duos. Both players being healthy for the first game gives the Rams a considerable advantage.
The match between the Rams and the 49ers begins Thursday at 8:35 p.m. ET and will be available on Netflix.
