The Los Angeles Rams, predicted as strong contenders for the Super Bowl, faltered in their season opener against the San Francisco 49ers. The Rams suffered a 27-7 defeat in an NFL International Series matchup held in Melbourne, Australia.
This game marked the debut of several new Rams players aimed at strengthening the defense, including Myles Garrett, reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year. Unfortunately, Garrett’s performance was impacted by an offseason injury that limited him on the field. He acknowledged his underwhelming play, stating, “This was the worst version of myself that I’ve put out there, and I’ve got to be better.” Garrett played around 40 snaps but recorded no stats, a surprising outcome for a player of his caliber.
When I was out there, I was a little bit more focused on myself and trying to stay healthy than what they were doing, and that showed. I wasn’t who I needed to be for my team.
Trent McDuffie emerged with credit in the secondary, recording four tackles and defending two passes. Safety Quentin Lake was also notable, leading with 10 tackles and an interception.
Despite Garrett’s struggles, San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy delivered a strong performance. He completed 25 of 34 passes, gaining 205 yards and scoring three touchdowns, although he also threw an interception. This game was particularly unusual for Garrett, who hadn’t recorded a game without quarterback pressures since 2018.
Aaron Donald was also absent from the Rams’ lineup as he didn’t travel to Australia. Donald, who retired in March 2024, continues to ready for a potential return to the NFL.
The Rams aim to improve in their next game against the New York Giants, scheduled for Monday, Sept. 21. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely as they seek to rebound from the disappointing start.
