Focus on Players, Not Coaches
LSU head coach Lane Kiffin discussed his team’s upcoming game against Ole Miss, emphasizing the importance of players rather than coaches. The game will feature a contest between the No. 7 Tigers and No. 8 Rebels, led by Kiffin’s previous defensive coordinator, Pete Golding. Despite the attention on Kiffin returning to face his former team, he stressed the significance of players’ preparation and performance.
Kiffin stated, “I know, obviously, a lot’s gonna be made about me, but this is about the players being prepared very well and playing very well.”
He added, “Pete’s not gonna tackle anybody; I’m not gonna throw any touchdowns,” highlighting the coaches’ roles off the field.
Preparation Over Hype
Kiffin explained to his players that this SEC game is crucial and both teams are undefeated so far. He urged focusing on preparation rather than external noise.
Kiffin highlighted, “…it won’t be about all the other stuff and all the noise and everything, it’ll be about how well did we practice, how well did we prepare, so how well did we play on game day going into a place that’s had a lot of success there.”
Ole Miss boasts an impressive win streak and standout players like quarterback Trinidad Chambliss and running back Kewan Lacy. LSU counters with quarterback Sam Leavitt, who has achieved 574 yards and two touchdowns. Both teams secured wins against ACC opponents in the season’s opening.
Background Dynamics
Kiffin’s transition to LSU made news during Ole Miss’s CFP journey last year. Golding became the Rebels’ head coach, with Kiffin supporting the team from a distance. Recent activities at LSU raised concerns when attempts to recruit players from NFL camps faced criticism, leading to retraction of such moves.
Game Day Expectations
Amid the drama, focus remains on the game. LSU is favored to win by a small margin, though Golding aims to secure a significant victory over his former colleague. The game takes place on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 7:30 p.m. ET, airing on ABC. Further insights on LSU and college football are available through Newsweek Sports.
