The campaign of Graham Platner for the Senate in Maine has been thrown into chaos following a rape accusation. This has exposed rifts within the Democratic Party, as progressives and moderates vie over nominating his replacement, even before Platner has indicated he’ll step down.
National Democratic leaders worry about losing a critical Senate seat. Platner had weathered past controversies, including a tattoo with Nazi symbolism, old inflammatory Reddit posts, and problematic relationships with women. However, the latest accusation has led to party leaders, including Maine Democratic Party heads and Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, calling for his withdrawal.
Platner faces a deadline of July 13 to be replaced on the ballot for a new Democratic challenger against longstanding Republican Senator Susan Collins. A primary Democratic Senate candidate super PAC has threatened to shift $24 million in advertisements to other states if Platner remains.
Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, a prominent Platner supporter, also urged him to resign, citing the gravity of the accusations. Sanders stated, “I have spoken with Graham Platner about the best path forward for Maine. In light of these very serious allegations, I have recommended that he step aside.”
In a private conversation with his campaign team, Platner indicated he still had influence over choosing his successor, without explicitly stating his withdrawal, suggesting an announcement may come shortly.
