In her latest book, Van Doren addresses the infamous casting couch culture in Hollywood. She discusses figures like Bill Cosby and Harvey Weinstein, highlighting how the #MeToo movement has exposed and held predators accountable. Van Doren emphasizes the empowerment women can find through mutual support.
“The casting couch was, and is, part of Hollywood’s shameful legacy,” Van Doren wrote.
She portrays Hollywood during its so-called Golden Age as a predatory environment for young actresses. Van Doren shares her personal encounters with exploitation and the emotional toll it took. Despite these challenges, she insists survival is achievable.
Van Doren recalls her early days in Hollywood, feeling used and questioning the sacrifices needed to achieve stardom. She describes a journey filled with lies and a sense of powerlessness while aspiring to make a name for herself.
Van Doren further reflects on the darker side of fame, citing the tragic ends of fellow actresses Marilyn Monroe and Dorothy Stratten. Her memoir extends beyond Hollywood, recounting experiences such as entertaining troops in Vietnam. A powerful experience marked by connection and compassion amidst the uncertainty and fear of war.
During her Vietnam tour, Van Doren encountered Charlie, an 18-year-old Marine. He left her with a cherished Zippo lighter before dying in an ambush, illustrating the poignant loss and camaraderie she witnessed during wartime.
Before her current release, Van Doren published another memoir in 1987, titled “Playing the Field: My Story.”
In a 2020 interview, Van Doren expressed contentment with her life beyond Hollywood. She recounted leaving the glitzy scene in the ‘60s to seek a cleaner environment for her son. She preferred a quieter lifestyle, maintaining friendships while largely avoiding the Hollywood party circuit.
Recognized as a sex symbol, Van Doren embraces her reputation. She acknowledges opening many doors in a conservative period, confident in her place in history. As she reflects on her journey, she remains grateful for a life defined by resilience and independence.
