Managerial Error Costs White Sox as Bullpen Strains Further

Chicago White Sox manager Will Venable faced a challenging moment in the team’s 8-2 defeat against the Cleveland Guardians at Rate Field. Venable’s oversight of a crucial rule compounded the difficulties for his team.

During the game, White Sox pitcher Noah Schultz struggled early by loading the bases. This prompted a visit from pitching coach Zach Bove. Following this, a two-run single by Angel Martinez increased the pressure.

Venable approached the mound soon after to discuss an appeal play, inadvertently breaking a rule. According to rule 5.10(l), a manager or coach can only visit the mound once per pitcher in an inning. A second visit requires the pitcher’s removal. Venable’s second visit led to Schultz’s early departure after facing just five batters, putting strain on an already tired bullpen following a 13-inning game the previous night.

David Sandlin, called up from Triple-A before the game, relieved Schultz. He had minimal warm-up time, pitching 5 1/3 innings with 96 pitches, effectively saving the bullpen from further wear.

Reflecting on the mistake, Venable acknowledged his error. He stated, “An inexcusable mistake by me. We had an appeal play in mind, and in the urgency, I overlooked our previous visit. It was my error.”

The White Sox’s loss marked their fourth consecutive defeat, a first this season. They hadn’t experienced more than a three-game skid prior to this.

As they prepare to face the Guardians again, the White Sox (59-56) hope to recover from this setback in the ongoing series.
