Mandy Patinkin Chooses Human Composting for His End-of-Life Plans

Mandy Patinkin, known for his role in “Criminal Minds,” has expressed his desire for human composting after his death. The 73-year-old actor shared his stance on his podcast, “Don’t Listen to Us,” highlighting his aversion to traditional burial practices due to his claustrophobia and heritage.

Patinkin described his discomfort with the idea of being placed in a coffin. “I’m very claustrophobic. The thought of being in a box is unacceptable to me,” he stated. He disagrees with arguments that he’s not present in the box, insisting it matters to him.

His Jewish background contributes to his feelings. Patinkin referenced the traumatic heritage of crematoriums, particularly those in Auschwitz, which he has visited. As a “conservative Chicago Jew,” he mentioned that Orthodox Judaism requires a body to remain intact for the world beyond, as per beliefs in resurrection.

“You must be complete,” Patinkin mentioned, with a humor that he’d be searching for missing parts, akin to “The Wizard of Oz,” if incomplete.

Human composting offers a solution. “I love this idea because I don’t have to be burned or feel claustrophobic,” he said. It allows him to remain whole and become part of the earth. He feels joy at the notion of becoming soil rather than being placed in an oven or coffin.

The concept was introduced to Patinkin by Robyn, a podcast guest, who discussed her husband’s preference for eco-friendly burials. This process involves placing a body in a vessel with organic materials, transforming it into soil over a month through heat, oxygen, and moisture control.

Bodies that undergo composting are eventually returned to families as soil, providing a natural alternative to conventional burial methods.
