Protests at Dover
Hundreds of anti-migrant protesters wearing masks brought traffic to a standstill at one of the world’s busiest passenger ports, the Port of Dover. Demonstrators, mostly dressed in black, blocked roads leading to the ferry port. They carried English and British flags and chanted slogans like “stop the boats” and “Christ is king.” The action caused a highway backup stretching four miles, disrupting both ferry passengers and freight.
Kent Police referred to the gathering as a “spontaneous protest” with no arrests made. However, local Labour Party lawmaker, Mike Tapp, questioned this characterization, suggesting the protest seemed organized. In an article for The Mirror, Tapp criticized the police for a lack of preparation, questioning whether intelligence was missed and if additional officers could have been deployed, including mutual aid from other forces like the Metropolitan Police.
Patriot Platform’s Involvement
A far-right group called Patriot Platform, led by Daniel Thomas (known online as Danny Tommo), claimed responsibility for the protest. Thomas is an anti-immigrant social media influencer associated with far-right activist Tommy Robinson. He took to social media platform X, celebrating the protest’s success and hinting at future actions.
Thomas also stated legal support was available for protesters, asserting that lawyers were on call during the demonstration. Kent Police has not responded to Thomas’ claims.
Reactions to the Protests
The U.K. government, led by the Labour Party, condemned the Dover demonstration. They emphasized the importance of the right to peaceful protest but criticized the disruption caused. Nigel Farage, leader of the Reform UK party, also condemned the protests and argued that no political protesters should wear balaclavas.
Further Protests in Portsmouth
A second protest occurred within 24 hours in Portsmouth, home to a significant naval base. This followed the interception of a boat carrying around 140 migrants. The U.K. Coastguard, a helicopter, and lifeboats were involved in bringing migrants from an inflatable boat to shore.
Thomas live-streamed from Portsmouth, urging supporters to gather in the city. Videos showed protesters confronting police as authorities attempted to transport the migrants to processing facilities. Some protesters tried to obstruct buses carrying migrants, but police formed lines to keep protesters at bay. Emma Reynolds, a cabinet member, labeled the protests as “thuggish and intimidating.”
Political Flashpoint: Migration
Anti-migrant protests have grown more frequent across the U.K. in recent years. Hotels housing asylum seekers have become regular protest sites. There have been instances of disorder and violence linked to such demonstrations in cities like Glasgow and Belfast. Far-right figure Tommy Robinson has held large protests, and in one 2025 rally, Elon Musk addressed the crowd, warning them about violence in their future.
The continued focus on migration remains a critical issue in British politics. Despite past pledges by successive British governments to reduce migrant crossings from France, the problem persists. In 2025, over 40,000 people made the journey. Government data indicates around 17,000 migrants crossed between January 1 and September 1 this year, a 43% decrease compared to the same period last year.
Despite falling numbers, the events in Dover and Portsmouth highlight the ongoing political challenge. High-profile activists continue to draw attention to migration, ensuring it remains a contentious issue.
