Matt Damon has undergone a dramatic transformation for his role in “The Odyssey,” leading to a permanent change in his diet. During his appearance on Amy Poehler’s “Good Hang” podcast, Damon revealed that he eliminated gluten from his diet, which he described as life-altering. This decision was part of an intense physical transformation for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film.
“It’s just a complete lifestyle change,” Damon explained, responding to Poehler’s observation on the challenges of “getting jacked in your 50s.” Damon reduced his weight to 167 pounds for the movie, crediting his new gluten-free diet for the change. “Any other time I tried to do something like that, it was always like, well, ‘My time, my workouts’ and this was like just put your foot on the gas and that’s it. And that’s the only way to do it, and eat a little less,” he stated. The actor expressed surprise at the impact gluten had on him, declaring, “I didn’t know.”
Poehler noted that many in their generation weren’t aware of food sensitivities when growing up. Damon agreed, acknowledging how little awareness there was about such issues back then. Despite being a fan of gluten-heavy foods like bread and beer, Damon finds the benefits outweigh the sacrifices. “How I feel is just much better,” he said.
Earlier in the year, Damon shared details about the rigorous routine he followed to portray Odysseus, the legendary Greek hero in Nolan’s adaptation. On the “New Heights” podcast with Travis and Jason Kelce, he spoke about his weight loss journey to 167 pounds, the lightest he’s been in decades. Nolan’s vision for the character demanded Damon be both lean and strong.
Damon credited the gluten-free diet and his work with a personal trainer for maintaining focus while achieving his goal. “Trainers are like, ‘What are we doing?’ And they can kind of do anything,” he remarked, highlighting the importance of having a clear goal.
This isn’t the first significant transformation of Damon’s career; he previously lost between 40-50 pounds for the 1996 film “Courage Under Fire.” The drastic weight loss was achieved in about 100 days, but it came with health warnings. A doctor informed Damon that it “could have shrunk my heart permanently.”
The experience has seen Damon commit to a healthier lifestyle, with Stephanie Giang-Paunon of Fox News Digital reporting on his entertainment journey.
