Suspension Details
Matt Gogel, a professional golfer on the PGA Tour Champions circuit, faces a six-month suspension for betting on PGA Tour events. The organization announced the penalty due to his violation of their integrity program, which prohibits wagering on PGA-sanctioned events.
Gogel’s Response
Gogel issued a statement clarifying his actions. He stated, “I placed small recreational wagers on golf in 2024 without realizing it. These wagers were not on regular PGA Tour events, PGA Tour Champions events, or any tournaments in which I participated.” Gogel emphasized his commitment to the sport’s integrity, expressing regret over the honest mistake.
“I look forward to resuming play on the PGA Tour Champions in 2027,” he added. His suspension begins on Sunday and will end on February 22, 2027.
Tour’s Stance
The PGA Tour confirmed Gogel never bet on tournaments he participated in. However, his actions breached the tour’s integrity rules. The suspension aligns with previous actions taken by the organization, as seen in 2023 when Vince India and Jake Staiano faced similar penalties for betting on PGA Tour events.
Background
Gogel, 55, has had a career as both a player and broadcaster. He won the Pebble Beach Pro-Am in 2002 and later turned to broadcasting with The Golf Channel and CBS Sports. Joining the PGA Tour Champions upon turning 50, Gogel currently ranks 20th in the Charles Schwab Cup points race.
