Mayor Mamdani and President Trump Discuss Housing Project and Immigration
Mayor Zohran Mamdani and President Trump met in New York City for a significant discussion at Gracie Mansion. This marks their third meeting, but their first at this venue. They had previously met at the White House following Mamdani’s election as mayor.
During the meeting, the mayor reintroduced a massive housing project proposed for Queens, requiring substantial federal aid. This project aims to build affordable housing and involves construction over Amtrak’s Sunnyside Yard in Queens. Former Mayor Bill de Blasio’s administration first suggested this proposal.
The mayor highlighted plans to develop 12,000 housing units, which also promises to create 30,000 jobs. This undertaking would involve the construction of the largest rail deck in the world and requires federal approvals and support.
President Trump acknowledged the project’s federal orientation and expressed interest in seeing it through. The topic of affordable housing was central to their discussion, although specific details were not disclosed.
Carlo Scissura, a longstanding advocate for the Sunnyside Yard project, praised the collaboration between the mayor and the president in advancing the proposal. He emphasized the potential impact of developing over 200 acres in a currently unused area.
However, Councilwoman Julie Won voiced concerns about the emphasis on this project. She questioned whether efforts should focus more immediately on addressing urgent housing and healthcare crises, instead of long-term plans.
The meeting coincided with the United Nations General Assembly week, where President Trump was scheduled to address issues like the conflict with Iran and peace initiatives in Gaza. He planned to meet with leaders from several countries, although a meeting with Israel’s Prime Minister Netanyahu was not scheduled due to timing conflicts.
